FAQs

The Basics

What is a virtual food drive?

A virtual food drive lets you raise funds online instead of collecting nonperishable items in person. Supporters browse featured food items, add them to a virtual version of our red barrel, and watch their impact grow in real time.

How do I start a virtual food drive?

It takes just a few minutes. Create your page, personalize it with a photo and goal, and share your link with your network. Start your virtual food drive today.

How long should my virtual food drive run?

Most drives run for two to four weeks, giving supporters enough time to participate while maintaining momentum. However, the length can be customized to fit your group or event.

Can I run an in-person drive alongside my virtual food drive?

Absolutely. Many hosts choose to combine both for the greatest reach and impact. It’s easy to set up your in-person food drive in just a few steps.

Teams & Corporate Giving

Can my company, school, or community group host a drive together?

Yes, groups can create a shared drive or set up teams, making it easy to build friendly competition and expand your collective impact.

Can I incorporate a corporate match into my drive?

Yes, organizations may include a matching gift component to help inspire participation by showing donors how their contributions can have an even greater impact. During setup, you'll have the opportunity to establish your match amount.

Tracking Your Progress

Can I see donations as they come in?

Yes, your drive page updates in real time, so you can watch your progress toward your goal as it happens.

Can I see who donated to my drive and how much they gave?

Yes, you'll be able to see the names of donors who have not chosen to remain anonymous. To respect donor privacy, anonymous donors will not be identified, and individual donation amounts are not shared.

When will I get a final report on how much my drive raised?

You'll receive a final report summarizing your drive's results within five business days of your drive's end date.

Payments & Donations

What payment methods are accepted?

We accept payment by credit card, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Venmo, bank transfer, and DAFpay.

Can someone donate to my drive by check instead of online?

Yes, checks can be mailed or dropped off in person, addressed to the San Diego Food Bank with your drive's name in the memo line. Attn: Virtual Food Drive San Diego Food Bank 9850 Distribution Ave San Diego, CA 92121

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes, the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and our federal tax ID number is 20-4374795. Your donation is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law, and you'll receive a confirmation email you can use for your records.

How far does my donation go?

We’re committed to serving those in need with both care and efficiency. Thanks to our bulk purchasing power, $1 provides 2 meals for neighbors facing hunger. Nearly 92 cents of every dollar we spend supports programs and services, with approximately 8 cents supporting administration and fundraising. Thank you for trusting us to make the most of your gift.
